Bush to seek $104.2B for weapons in fiscal '09

By Tony Capaccio Bloomberg news WASHINGTON — The Bush administration will ask Congress to let the U.S. military spend $104.2 billion on weapons in fiscal 2009, an increase of 5.3 percent over the amount approved this fiscal year, according to Defense Department documents. The proposal includes money for planes produced by Lockheed Martin Corp., trucks built by General Dynamics Corp. and BAE Systems Plc, a new family of armored vehicles built by Boeing Co. and missile-defense systems made by Raytheon Co. and others. 313-ship fleet represents a minimum, Navy's top admiral says

BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) - The Navy's oft-stated goal of a 313-ship fleet should be considered a minimum level that may have to be increased to meet obligations around the world, the Navy's top admiral said Tuesday. Adm. Gary Roughead, chief of naval operations, suggested the fleet will have to grow to meet the Navy's commitments. "The 313 will not be enough for the missions that we're going to be tasked with in the coming years," he said. (more)
Bath Iron Works Awarded $142 Million for Work on DDG 1000 ZUMWALT Class Destroyers

BATH, Maine, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The U.S. Navy has awarded Bath Iron Works, a subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD - News), a $142 million contract modification to continue work on the new DDG 1000 Zumwalt Class of destroyers. Work to be performed includes long lead material procurement and pre-production planning to support detail design and ship construction. The contract being modified was originally awarded in August 2006. The Zumwalt class of ships represents the Navy's next generation of multi- mission surface combatants which will provide a broad range of capabilities that are vital both to supporting the global war on terror and to fighting and winning major combat operations. Dugan Shipway, president of Bath Iron Works, commented, "This award reinforces the commitment of the U.S. Navy to this important program and we are also committed to its success." Bath Iron Works, a leader in surface combatant design and construction, employs approximately 5,800 people. Its current program for the Navy is the highly successful series of Arleigh Burke-class AEGIS guided-missile destroyers, for which it is lead designer and builder.
